The
second graders were very excited to participate in Market Day as a culminating
activity for our economics unit. For several weeks prior to this activity, they
earned play money to spend on Market Day. Also to prepare for Market Day, they
experienced being a producer by creating goods and services to sell to other
second grade classes. On Market Day, they were able to experience being a
consumer when they purchased goods and services using the money they had earned.
Real life problem solving occurred when some students had to lower their prices
when their goods were not selling. Others sold out of their goods very quickly
when the demand was great for their product! Students carefully considered how
to spend the amount of money they had. Some students decided not to use all
their money because they understood the concept of saving for the future.
