Skatetime is Here! by Coach McDonald

Skatetime in PE has begun…

The first day has been covering safety and learning how to put on all the equipment.  The rest of the days are spent having a fun time skating.  Some are learning to skate by skating on mats while others are skating laps around the mats.  It is a joy to see the student’s faces light up as they move around the gym on their skates.  Remember to have your student bring socks and a cap if they are using our helmets.

Remind your student:

Practice needs patience.

You get good at what you practice.

Slamming Some Poetry by Lindsey Keys (3rd grade teacher)

The 3rd grade recently performed in their 2nd annual Poetry Slam! The students demonstrated their talents by sharing a variety of poems through acting in front of the 2nd grade. We’re sure the audience was thrilled with the show, and likely very excited to participate in the slam next year!

A few of the 3rd graders reflected on their performances;

Avery M. from Mrs. Keys’ class said, “It was a great chance for us third graders to learn how to express feelings through poetry. We learned that poetry can be expressed in different ways, and the slam gave us ideas to make poems of our own!”

Samuel C. from Mrs. Lawson’s class said, “It was fun to perform in front of the second graders!”

Ava J. from Mrs. Frias’ class said, “I loved reading to the second graders and listening to my friends act out to the poems. It was really fun!”

Market Day in Second Grade! by Lisa Ross

The second graders were very excited to participate in Market Day as a culminating activity for our economics unit. For several weeks prior to this activity, they earned play money to spend on Market Day. Also to prepare for Market Day, they experienced being a producer by creating goods and services to sell to other second grade classes. On Market Day, they were able to experience being a consumer when they purchased goods and services using the money they had earned. Real life problem solving occurred when some students had to lower their prices when their goods were not selling. Others sold out of their goods very quickly when the demand was great for their product! Students carefully considered how to spend the amount of money they had. Some students decided not to use all their money because they understood the concept of saving for the future.

THE FIELD TRIP BY Amogh and Carson

The Field Trip

Bayou Bend

No wonder Mr. Wilson wanted to volunteer at Ima Hogg’s house’ which is now a museum. Ms. Hogg’s house is filled with many amazing artifacts that we want to share with you.

The blue room was Ms. Hogg’s favorite room filled with amazing revolutionary war decorations. It includes 3 paintings of the battle ships attacking each other. And it also has 8 layers of blue paint.

All of the people that volunteered are very kind. They showed us a whole lot of things and we hope that you could come and  go to  Bayou Bend and learn fun stuff!

Field Trip Bayou Bend Park By: Rileigh C. Meaghan G.

Field Trip

Bayou Bend Park

Bayou Bend Park was an amazing place for our field trip. It is filled with educational objects and fun things to see all from the 1600s-1900s.

The first thing we did was go through Ms. Ima Hogg’s house where we looked at most of her beautiful rooms. While in the house, we saw many cool and amazing furniture items and many paintings.

After we went through the house, we saw a wonderful skit about the Colonial Times. We also got to see how people dressed in the Colonial period.

In the end, we had a wonderful time going through the house and seeing everything in it and learning about the things in the house.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers for helping us learn many new things!

My Dream of Kindness by 4th grader Sydney H.

This is another of the 4th grade "I Have a Dream" speeches chosen for sharing at our MLK tribute. It fits in perfectly with our emphasis on BEAM (Because Everyone's Attitude Matters) and kindness during the month of February!

I have a dream…

That people will be kind to each other. That there will be no more bullies. Enemies will not fight and they will become friends. There will be no more mean names.

I have a dream…

That life will be made up of little things like smiles and kindness. And no more selfishness or unkindness. Major problems can come from it. An effort of kindness or smiles will be appreciated by many in this world.

This is my dream!

Grocery shopping in Kindergarten! by Kathryn Munford (Kinder teacher and team leader)

We have been talking with our students about the food groups and planning healthy meals.  The students in Mrs. Munford’s class have been doing a little shopping to “purchase” some of these healthy foods.  Students discussed the different roles that were needed in the grocery store: cashier, stocker and customers and what each person does in that role.

Customers had to make their shopping lists and then were able to pick out their foods from the shelves.  Cashiers totaled the orders and put the groceries into the shopping bags.  Stockers made sure everything got put back in the correct spot so future shoppers could find what they needed.

When kids engage in pretend play, they are learning how to take turns, share responsibility, creatively problem solve and build language.  The kids are having a great time, so don’t tell them that they are learning too!

Just for Fun!!!! by Mrs. Shorter (TWE Art teacher and Specials Team Leader)

Do you see any similarities?
Well, so does the rest of the Wolf pack!
Very frequently passersby ask,”Mrs. Shorter is that your son?”
And my reply is always the same, “No my son is in 7th grade at Seven Lakes JR High, why do you ask?”
You can probably already guess why they ask…. THE HAIR!
The boys in this picture are the lucky group of boys with AWESOME HAIR like me!

Jump Rope for Heart by Coach Park, Coach McDonald, and Mrs. Hoette

On Day of Service, January 16th, our students participated in Jump Rope for Heart during their Specials time. Jump Rope for Heart was fun and energetic.  Students participated in 10 different stations that allowed them to practice what they learned in order to be heart healthy all their lives.  TWE students and staff raised $14, 078 for the American Heart Association.  We have ordered the remaining ducks and prizes and expect them to arrive in the next 3 weeks.  Thanks to all the students who worked hard, to all the volunteers who helped it run so smoothly, and to all the staff who organized their classes.   This Jump Rope for Heart event takes a great deal of teamwork to make it so successful!

My Dream- No Litter by Nitya H.

In preparation for our recent MLK Day Tribute, 4th graders wrote "I Have a Dream" essays. This is one of the essays chosen for sharing at the assembly.

I have a dream that the world shall stop littering. If we stop littering, our beloved Earth will become a better place. It will make the Earth cleaner and she will give us fresh air. Earth will also provide us with fresh food, fresh air, fresh water, and more. Not littering will also stop polluting the beautiful ocean which is filled with wonders. Not littering will also stop killing amazing animals. The animals won’t eat the garbage so they won’t choke and perish. Not littering will also make nature happy. If we stop littering, it will stop causing forest fires. We shouldn’t put flammable things next to fire in a forest so that the trees won’t catch on fire. Not littering will also make us happy. We will feel happy that we made a change in the world. That too is a good change. We will not feel guilty that we polluted the world. We must make a good change in the world. I have a dream!

I Dream of a Beautiful Environment by Claire A.

In preparation for our recent MLK Day Tribute, 4th graders wrote "I Have a Dream" essays. This is one of the essays chosen for sharing at the assembly.

I have a dream that the environment will be safe, left alone, and not polluted. Its resources shall be used wisely. Its beauty shall be recognized. We wouldn’t have houses, desks, and paper, if trees weren’t here. We wouldn’t have clothes or food if plants and animals weren’t here. Everything we use in our lives comes from Mother Earth. We wouldn’t survive without the environment! Take care of our world. You can do that by recycling, not littering, conserving water and electricity, and most important, loving our environment.

Netiquette by Ms. Hailey Taylor (TWE Librarian)

One of the many things our students are good at is texting.  Many of them can text faster than we can type. As technology becomes more widespread and more accessible, making sure our students know the Do’s and Don’ts of texting, and other online communications, is growing increasingly more important. I asked our 5th graders to help me make our younger students more aware of just how their text messages are coming across to those that receive them. They impressed me by going above and beyond by creating “Texting Netiquette” posters for all who walk our halls. Our creative and clever students are reinforcing proper communication techniques while bringing to light common texting mistakes and ways to avoid them. I can only hope this will enlighten our students and emphasize what they are learning in the library and the classroom!

A Beautiful World by 4th grader Fabiola B.

In preparation for our recent MLK Day Tribute, 4th graders wrote "I Have a Dream" essays. This is one of the essays chosen for sharing at the assembly.

I have a dream that one day more people would take care of our world. A world here there would be no pollution and our nation would be able to see all the bright shining stars. A world where there would be a free, alive ocean, rree from oil spills and liter. Less percent of people would breathe polluted air. Less animals would get stuck in trash. There would be more bright colors in our world which means more art and art is the voice for some people which shows how they are. Today I have a dream -for this nation. So many more people would take care of our world our environment our home.

Our Field Trip Experience by 4th graders Brooke R. and Samuel M

From Brooke R.:

My Field Trip experience was so much FUN! We went to the Taste of Texas. I learned so much about Texas history and how the state was named and also how the city of Houston got its name. Houston was named for Sam Houston. The owner of the restaurant told us lots of information about the state of Texas, then she gave us a tour of the kitchen. Most of all, I liked when she let us go in the freezer. She turned the lights out and we screamed and laughed. It was the Best! After all the Texas info, we even ate chicken fingers and fries with a nice cold sprite. The restaurant visit was exciting.
Afterwards, we went to the Bear Creek Park where we saw peacocks in a cage and other animals. I enjoyed playing in the park with my best friend Georgia, blowing bubbles and watching them float in the air was great. On the Field Trip, I even got a chance to talk to my best teachers on the bus on the way back to school. The Field Trip was Awesome!

From Samuel M. :

I moved to the USA from Scotland. This was my first Field Trip in the USA, but most of all it was my first time riding on a Yellow School Bus. It was an Amazing experience because I haven’t seen all of Katy and I got a chance to have a window seat on the bus. I could see lots of things out the window. I so concentrated on the view out of my window and we were there in a splash. Once we were there, I learned lots about the history of Texas and believe me I learned lots. Mostly, I liked going in the freezer back in the kitchen area of the restaurant. Everyone screamed when the lights were turned off. It was cold, but in my opinion it wasn’t really cold. When I came out of the freezer I smelled bacon and it smelled delicious. After the kitchen tour, I learned more about Texas and some of the students got a chance to dress in costumes of famous Texas History people. I learned so much about Texas, and lots of interesting facts. We were served chicken fingers and fries with ketchup and BBQ for dipping sauce. They were so good I could have them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So, after eating we traveled to the park, I was so excited to get back on the bus again and I sat with a friend. At the park, I saw lots of animals such as, a pony in a big field, pigs, birds, and a parrot that sounded like a car alarm. It was really loud! I also got a chance to see a peacock. I really enjoyed playing in the park for quite a while. Then back on the bus. That was my First Field trip in the America. SO EXCITING!!

Taste of Texas by Cherelle McKinnies (4th grade teacher and Team Leader)

The 4th grade students really enjoyed the Taste of Texas Field Trip last week. They added so many interesting facts about Texas what they have been learning in class this year. They were all really engaged in the lesson and so excited about being at a top-notch restaurant. It was extra special to enjoy a yummy Taste of Texas lunch. Along with the Taste of Texas history lesson, they had an opportunity to visit Bear Creek Park and see the Veteran’s Memorial and a variety of animals. The students loved having an opportunity to enjoy the BEAUTIFUL weather  with their friends and learn at the same time.  It was a PACKTASTIC Field Trip! Check Pack Prints tomorrow to read about the trip from the viewpoint of two students!!!!

Odd One Out by Mrs. Libby Smith (5th grade teacher and team leader)

The students pictured are enjoying an instructional strategy called “Odd One Out” in my 5th grade class. After investigating and taking notes on the events of Westward Expansion, the students were put into groups to find the odd one out. Each student grouped the sections of land in any way that they wanted. It could be a group of 3, 4, 5, 6 or all 7 sections that now make up the continental United States. Each member of the group then had to find the odd one out -or one section that does not fit in a category with the others. As long as the students could justify their answer, they were correct, and the answers were limitless. Some categories the students came up with were: lands acquired in the 1800’s, lands gained from European nations, lands that were purchased, and lands that were gained from Mexico.
