Grocery shopping in Kindergarten! by Kathryn Munford (Kinder teacher and team leader)

We have been talking with our students about the food groups and planning healthy meals.  The students in Mrs. Munford’s class have been doing a little shopping to “purchase” some of these healthy foods.  Students discussed the different roles that were needed in the grocery store: cashier, stocker and customers and what each person does in that role.

Customers had to make their shopping lists and then were able to pick out their foods from the shelves.  Cashiers totaled the orders and put the groceries into the shopping bags.  Stockers made sure everything got put back in the correct spot so future shoppers could find what they needed.

When kids engage in pretend play, they are learning how to take turns, share responsibility, creatively problem solve and build language.  The kids are having a great time, so don’t tell them that they are learning too!
