Making Connections with Food Pyramids by Brenda Stein (1st grade teacher)

First graders are really enjoying learning about ecosystems and food pyramids in science this week.  So far their favorite activity has been creating their own food pyramid.  They had thoughtful discussions on what would happen if a part of the food pyramid was eliminated.  These discussions brought up real world problems that students in our class experience on their family farm land with feral hogs.  Meaningful connections to the content that we teach empowers students to apply and extend their learning in meaningful ways.
